In the 18-member ministry which will be sworn in Wednesday, Badal and four of his relatives (total five) figure prominently. It was only because of the ties between the families that even the Haryana opposition accused the Chautalas of failing to negotiate the SYL dispute.Chandigarh : As he takes oath as chief minister of Punjab for a record fifth time Wednesday, Parkash Singh Badal will find himself quite at home in his new cabinet – ‘relatively’ speaking! “This relation is not based on political motives, but symbolises the struggles of two families of both the states that had fought for ‘kisan or kamera varg’ (farming and labour class) of society since Independence,” the former Haryana CM added. Chautala told TOI after his father’s demise 22 years ago, Badal is the head of their family, and he is happy his next generation also shares a strong bond with the Badals. The bonding was such that a group of khap leaders also appealed to the SAD patriarch to resolve the Chautala family dispute. At a gathering in Sirsa after the death of Chautala’s wife in August 2019, he pitched for a united Chautala family, saying it pained him to see them divided. As the Chautala family faced a tough time because of the split, Badal tried to reunite the Chautala brothers and openly appealed to both Ajay and Abhay. “We can sacrifice our lives for each other,” he used to say. Badal often used to say that he had a relationship of heart with the family of Chaudhary Devi Lal and it was above every other relation. Chautala had even campaigned for Badal in his Lambi assembly constituency during the 2022 Punjab assembly polls. It was only because of Badal that the undivided INLD had a strong backing of Sikh voters in Haryana. When Chautala’s sons – Ajay and Abhay – were still part of undivided family, Badal campaigned for Ajay’s son Dushyant Chautala in Hisar parliamentary election in 2014 despite SAD’s alliance with the BJP in Punjab and at the Centre. Even when Chautala was jailed in connection with the teacher recruitment scam, Badal took care of the Chautala family as the family’s elder. The Chautala family also owns land in the home district of the Badal family. While running the Haryana government in 1989, then CM Devi Lal had also reportedly allotted an industrial plot to the Badal family to run its business in Gurgaon. His son Anantbir too attended Digvijay’s wedding function in Sirsa on March 10 with his grandfather, the last public function where the five-time CM was seen before his illness and death on April 25. Badal’s son Sukhbir Singh Badal has a good equation with Chautala’s sons and was recently seen attending the wedding of Ajay Chautala’s younger son Digvijay. Devi Lal had even performed ‘kanyadan’ and all the rituals as father when Badal’s only daughter, Parneet Kaur, married Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, son of former Punjab CM Partap Singh Kairon, because Badal was in jail at the time. The Badals and the Chautalas attend celebrations and mournings in each other’s families. Chautala was often seen at the palatial residence of the Badals in Badal village of Punjab’s Muktsar district, which is close to Sirsa. The two Parkashs could be seen together till earlier this year, at each other’s farmhouses at Tejakhera and Balasar in Haryana’s Sirsa district. ‘Tau’ Devi Lal, who died in 2001, was 12 years older to Badal. Strong family ties continued between the families of Devi Lal’s son Om Prakash Chautala, who is 88 now, and the Badal patriarch. It started with a friendship between Parkash Singh Badal and Chaudhary Devi Lal in undivided Punjab, and is still maintained by the two families. CHANDIGARH: The friendship between the Badals of Punjab and the Chautalas of Haryana was so strong that no political alliance ever came between their decades-old ties.
